I read an article two days ago that stated when the Great Recession began in December 2007; there were 1.5 job seekers for every available job. Today there are 6 job seekers for every available position. Likewise, it’s extremely important that job seekers distinguish themselves during their job search. There are methods job seekers can use to accomplish this. However, I am going to share two powerful techniques job seekers can use.

Job seekers, including you, can distinguish themselves through the creative use of a website and blog.
1. Website: Instead of creating a standard website under your name to display your resume, you should create a website with:
Some job seekers took it a step further by creating websites such as Twittershouldhireme.com, Facebookshouldhireme.com, Microsoftshouldhireme.com, and so on. These campaigns led to job offers and/or business opportunities for several of these individuals.
To distinguish myself further, I created a “Hire Kenrick” and “as many jobseekers possible” website. This led to a social media project offer that I did not accept since it was a conflict of interest – required me to market non-free career services to job seekers.
2. Blog: For your blog you want to demonstrate your expertise via your blog posts. Your blog can contain competitive analyses of industries of interest and portions of a white paper you may have written.
To take it a step further, you should submit your blog posts for publication consideration in several online directories. Your post should include a link box similar to this:
Kenrick Chatman is a revenue and profit growth expert who writes articles on industry analysis and business development. Feel free to read about other industries by visiting his industry analysis blog.
Likewise, once your articles are published it will increase your web presence. So when potential employers conduct a Google search by your name, they will find references to your link box describing you as an expert.
You can also write an e-book and allow people to download it for free on your blog which could lead to a viral effect – which tons of people will download it and write about it on their blogs. This was the case of a job seeker named Steve Chazin who was quickly established as an expert on Apple marketing.
In conclusion, use your creativity and strengths to develop a strategy that will set you apart from other job seekers during your job search.
