Let’s face it. Job hunting today is extremely challenging especially if you are either unemployed or underemployed. The longer the search, the more difficult it is to maintain your enthusiasm, hope, and motivation. However, as long as you consistently perform the efficient and required job search activities; you will eventually land your next position. Since there are opportunities in almost all (if not all) adverse situations, it’s also important to capitalize on these opportunities to help counter any negative feelings.

Below are some of the opportunities you now have, especially if you worked long hours during your previous position.

1. Enhance Health - you now have time to improve your health. To keep hope alive during a daunting job search, it’s vital that you eat well, acquire adequate rest, and exercise consistently. To accomplish this, you should cook your own meals, sleep at least 8 hours a day, and attend group exercise classes. Not only will you meet new people, but you will also increase your energy level which helps counter negative emotions.

2. Strengthen Relationships - you can now spend more time with your family, friends, and loved ones to strengthen your bonds with them. There is no greater feeling inside than when you and your love ones are savoring every minute of quality time spent together. Time that you previously could not spend due to your hectic work schedule.

3. Reflect on Career - you should also determine where your career has led you and where you want to go moving forward. This could include starting the entrepreneurial career you never could due to a lack of time or becoming complacent as a result of your previous secure, yet demanding position. Once your income matches or exceeds the pay from your future job on a consistent basis, you can now work full-time in the career of your dreams. Likewise, you will “recession-proof” your career since you are now in control of your own future and destiny.

4. Build Network - you also have time to meet, develop, and provide value to new and existing personal and professional contacts during your job search. By offering to help whenever you can, your network will more than likely assist you during your future endeavors, including any career transitions.

5. Master the Search Process - now is the time for you to learn how to acquire a desirable job in hopefully the toughest economic downturn of our lifetime. To accomplish this, you should become a student of the job search process and execute the knowledge you acquired. Afterwards, you should make adjustments and implement new strategies until you acquire your goal. Most importantly, this knowledge should give you a leg up on your competitors (who did not have this opportunity) during any future career transitions.

6. Professionally Develop - to improve your marketability in the job market, you should consider strengthening or acquiring new skills via training and/or pro bono assignments. These activities can help improve your work-related confidence, performance, and value. They can also help improve your defense against future displacements in the workplace.
