Origins of this Online Career Community

Back in the Fall of 1999, I decided not to pursue medical school. Instead I became involved in the dot-com bubble at the time. Likewise, over a 3 month period I taught myself HTML and a little JavaScript. I interviewed for a HTML position, did not receive an offer, and returned to Dallas in 2000.

In late 2000, I became a part-time distributor for a network marketing or MLM nutritional company. Instead of physically recruiting others and selling the company’s products, I created a website from scratch. After my site got listed in a Yahoo! directory, I started to use link farms. Within a few months I had a Top 10 ten ranking for popular keywords like "nutrition" in AltaVista and AskJeeves.

The nutritional company I was a distributor for, also sold branded websites that were not optimized for search engines. As a result the company requested that I take down my website. That request ended my affiliation with the company and my involvement with search engine optimization.

Now let’s fast forward to 2009. At the end of January, I was displaced. Although both the US and global economies were not optimal, I believed I would land my next opportunity within three months; since I was equipped with more education and experience helping companies generate sustainable revenue and profit growth.

However over a three month period, I did not see any openings for corporate strategy positions. The few positions that were advertised as “strategic” were not. For example, I interviewed for one “strategy” position. Instead of a corporate strategy professional, the company really needed a sales trainer to help improve the productivity and production of its sales professionals.

Since I knew things were not going to change, I enrolled in a 10 week boot camp in May to supercharge my job search. I learned creative techniques of illustrating my value to senior executives at my targeted companies. I also built a career website and began researching social media marketing for an e-book I am going to release later this year. I am currently involved in uncovering hidden strategy opportunities.

I have had the privilege of acquiring an abundance of knowledge regarding the job search process. As a result, I have decided to share it with others; by combining social media marketing with my HTML skills to create an online community. An online career center to help as many individuals possible land their next opportunity by sharing best practices and learning from one another.
